How Do Pets Work in Crimson Desert?

Every pet you register works the same way once active: it follows you through exploration and auto-loots items from enemy corpses after combat. There is currently no loot filter, so your pet grabs everything it can reach: useful materials, junk, ore near gathering nodes, and even items off open shelving in the environment. Keep your inventory clear before long combat sessions or the tab fills up fast. Your pet stores collect items in its own inventory tab, separate from yours. You can check and clear it any time from the Pets tab.
Pets can take damage during combat. If an enemy hits your companion mid-fight, it will struggle to move properly until the area is clear. Once things settle down, use Healing Force Palm to restore it.
You can store up to 30 registered pets. Only one can be active at a time. Summoned pets disappear automatically when you mount your horse - they do not follow you on horseback. After Chapter 3, inactive pets have dedicated spots around the Greymane Camp rather than clustering outside the main tent. Unregistering a pet from your roster is permanent, so treat that option carefully.
Pets cannot be summoned while you are in the Abyss region. Once you return to the ground below, your pet can be called normally from the radial menu.
Starting in patch 1.04.00, you can name your horses and pets through the pet management menu.
The game does not actively introduce the pet system to you - it is effectively a hidden mechanic until you stumble into it. The Chapter 4 Greymanes faction quest called The Greymanes' New Fangs walks you through claiming a stray dog alongside your companion Naira, but you can start building Trust with any animal from Chapter 1 onward without waiting for that quest.

How Does the Trust System Work?

Trust starts at 0 and needs to reach 100 before you can claim an animal. Two actions build trust: petting and feeding. Both have daily caps that reset at midnight in-game time.
Petting gives +5 Trust per interaction, with a daily cap of 5 times for a maximum of +25 Trust per day. Dogs are petted by walking up and holding the prompt. Cats work differently - pick the cat up first, then pet it while you are holding it.
Feeding is more efficient. Each pet accepts up to 3 food items per day. Standard food gives +10 Trust per feeding. Favorite food gives +35 per feeding. Feeding three times at +35 each plus five pettings at +5 each gives 130 Trust in a single day - enough to claim any dog whose favorite food you have.
A practical trick: start your session around 10 PM in-game time. Hit the daily cap for petting and feeding, then rest or wait until after midnight. The limits reset, so you can immediately do another full round without wasting an entire day.
Trust progress is saved to the animal's individual ID and persists between your visits. If an animal despawns from an area while you are away, fast travel back or save and reload - it should respawn with its Trust counter intact. There is a known edge case where some animals can despawn and return as a fresh spawn (different ID, Trust reset). If this happens, save nearby before building Trust so you can reload if the animal vanishes mid-tame.
When trust reaches 100, hold the selection button near the animal and choose the Claim option. The pet is now registered to you.

What Are the Fastest Ways to Tame a Pet?

This question comes up constantly, so it gets its own section.

For dogs - the Bone method: Any bone (Small Bone, Bone, or equivalent) gives a dog +25 Trust per feeding. Feed three bones, then pet five times. That is 75 + 25 = 100 Trust in one sitting, no waiting required. Bones drop from hunting animals in the wild, making this the most resource-efficient one-day tame if you have been doing any hunting. You can do this entire sequence without waiting for a daily reset.

For dogs - Fine Meat: Three Fine Meat feedings (+35 each = +105) plus five pettings (+25) puts you at 130 Trust in one in-game day. Available at the Hernand Grocer or Butchery south of the inn. More expensive than bones but easier to stock in bulk.

For cats - the Golden Carp method: The Golden Carp is a Legendary Fish that gives +100 Trust to any cat in a single feeding, bypassing the multi-day standard process entirely. Feed one Golden Carp, and the cat hits 100 Trust immediately. You can claim it on the spot.
Where to find Golden Carp: The lake just below the P in Pailune on the map, east of the Argent Peaks near Snowgrass Heartright. The fish are large and golden-colored - easy to spot from the shore. No fishing rod needed. Walk along the lake's edge until you see one, jump in, swim to it, and hold the interact button to catch it. Watch for the legendary horse Royler nearby - it roams the same area. If you are taming multiple cats in a single session, Pororin Village is the best location because cats are dense there. Stock several Golden Carp beforehand.
Known issue with cats and food: Cats sometimes ignore food left on the ground and walk away. If this happens, pick up the cat again and pet it once - this usually prompts it to eat whatever is dropped.
For birds - the Sotdae trust loop: Birds build Trust faster than cats and dogs by default. One feeding visit at a perch stocked with favorite food gives +35 Trust. A bird can go from 0 to 100 Trust in three good feeding sessions. The perch holds food between sessions, so you do not need to restock every visit.

Where Do I Buy Pet Food?

The Hernand Grocer and Butchery, located south of the inn in Hernand, stock most of the food you will need for dogs and cats[wand.gg]. The Fishmonger in Hernand sells Squid and fish for cats. Fine Meat is available at the Butchery and is the fastest standard tame for dogs.
Source: Crimson Desert Pywel Map[wand.gg]

Drop food on the ground near the animal to feed it. Open your inventory, select the item, and choose Discard or Take Out - the food drops at your feet and the animal walks over to eat it. If other animals or NPCs are nearby, they may eat it first. Try to isolate your target before feeding, especially in busy areas like Hernand's streets.
Some pets do not eat from the ground. The Pororin village cats, in particular, cannot be fed as of the most recent patch data - petting only. For these, the midnight double-session method (pet to the daily cap, wait for midnight, repeat) is the fastest available route.

All 9 Cat Pets: Locations and Favorite Foods

Cats are found across most of Pywel. The main exception is the Crimson Desert region itself, where regular cats do not appear. Pororin Village has the highest density. To interact with a cat, pick it up first, then pet it while holding it. Cats also run away more readily than dogs - chase them down if needed.
Color variants exist within most breeds. Cats and Loafy Cats in particular come in multiple coat colors. Some color variants are time-of-day dependent: if you are looking for a specific coat, try visiting the same spawn at different hours.

Patch 1.04.00 added five new cat variants to this roster. Specific names for all five were not confirmed in patch notes at time of writing. If you encounter an unfamiliar cat - particularly around Pororin and Florindale - it is likely one of the new additions.
Known bug - Fat Cat: The Fat Cat has a documented issue where it can disappear from your pet list immediately after you register it. If this happens, jump into the Naz River. Submerging your character forces the pet model to reload and the cat should reappear in your roster.

All 10 Dog Pets: Locations and Favorite Foods

Dogs are the most forgiving pet category. They approach you on their own, they eat without much fuss, and their favorite foods are cheap and easy to source from Hernand. Beagles at the Constabulary are the most common first pet. Collecting all ten breeds - across their color variants - counts toward the 30-pet Life Challenge.

How Do I Get Bird Pets?

Birds use a separate system from cats and dogs. You cannot feed them from the ground. Instead, you need the Sotdae of Bond - a carved wooden perch that acts as a bird feeder.
How to get the Sotdae of Bond:

  • Go to Pororin (Florindale area, southeast of the Hernand Highlands).
  • Attempt to enter the village. The Pororin Patrol will sleep-dart you. This needs to happen three times.
  • After the third time, talk to Arkin near Outcast's Hearth. This starts the Trembling Woods faction quest (also called The Unreachable Village).
  • Progress through the quest: retrieve the Pororin Relic from the giant walking tree in Trembling Gorge.
  • Return the relic to Arkin. This unlocks access to Florindale and the Pororin Forest Guardians area.
  • Complete the Authorized Access section of the quest.
  • You will receive the Sotdae of Bond. If you already completed this quest chain before the 1.04 patch, check your camp Private Storage at Howling Hill.
If you leave the Sotdae behind after a session, Carl at the Greymane Camp recovers it automatically. Buy it back from him for 1 Silver.
How to use the Sotdae of Bond:
  • Put the Sotdae of Bond in your inventory.
  • Place it using Ctrl + R on keyboard, or LB + Y on controller.
  • Interact with the perch and load it with food: Insects, Oats, Seeds, and Fruits are all accepted.
  • Step back and wait. A bird will land and begin eating.
  • Let it feed until it reaches 100 Trust.
  • Approach and select Take In.
The feeder holds food between sessions - load it with multiple food types to attract a wider variety of birds based on your current region. The type of bird that visits depends on the region you are in, not just the food. Trust builds faster here than with cats or dogs: a single feeding visit gives up to +35 Trust, and birds require no daily-reset cycling to tame.
Bird pets land on your arm when you stand still long enough. They do not wear the standard pet armor that cats and dogs use.

All Bird Pets: Locations and Best Setup - Birds of Prey

Birds are tied to specific regions and terrain types. Where you place the Sotdae of Bond determines what shows up - moving it to a completely different area changes the species pool entirely. The Legendary Phoenix sits outside this system and is covered in its own section.
A few species have multiple color variants with different favorite foods, listed as separate rows. Each visually distinct variant counts separately toward your 30-pet roster. With 30+ bird species and variants across all regions, birds alone can fill most of your pet cap if you are collecting broadly.
Best confirmed Sotdae spots:

  • Greymane Camp cliff edge / Nas River area - the most efficient early spot. Crows, Sparrows, Blue Jays, and Hawks all visit here. Place the Sotdae on the cliff and stock it with a mix of grains, meat, and insects to maximize variety.
  • Pororin Village / Florindale - best for Sparrows and Parrots. The open areas around the village attract smaller birds consistently. Good to set up here while you are already taming cats.
  • Goldleaf Guildhouse area, Hernand - confirmed Hawk spawn. Place the Sotdae on elevated ground nearby.
  • Demeniss Port / Demeniss riverbanks - go-to for Seagulls and Crows. Place near the water, load with fish, meat, or insects.
  • Spire of Ringing Truth cliff, west Pailune - Eagle and Gyrfalcon spawn here between 5 PM and 11 PM. Arrive by midday to place the Sotdae before the window opens. If the wrong bird lands first, shoot it off - the perch may attract flies and need repositioning.
  • Pailune / Sanctum of Absolution - good for Condors and other large birds. Place on cliff edges or elevated mountain terrain.
  • Trader's Expanse area, Crimson Desert - Pigeons spawn here. Also where Desert Goose, Sand Grouse, and Kentish Plover are found. The only region for desert-exclusive birds.
  • Delesyia cliff edges / Three-Brothers' Cliff / south of Scholastone Institute - best Owl spots. Nighttime only. Set up the Sotdae around 4 AM in-game time, load with Tough Meat, and use elevated ground rather than flat terrain.
  • Rain Forest region - required for all exotic parrots (Eclectus Parrot, Sun Conure, Grey Parrot, Little Blue Macaw, Ringneck Parrot, Citron-Crested Cockatoo). This is a sub-region label in the database; the exact map area is not yet confirmed in available sources. Load with fruit.
