Short answer
No confirmed fix yet. Players suggest: Now, the rat feces to water trick requires you to have the chemist unlock, and those subsequent chemist machines to even try to undertake that task lol.
The problem
I have yet to see it sold or dropped by ANY NPCs before purchasing the entire hydroponic farmer tree. Either this thing is just a 0.1% drop unless you buy the perk, or it's actually content locked behind dumping almost 2k into a completely separate branch while running the exact opposite food-production setup. You're asking a bunch of questions, and a lot of them are behind different unlocks lol. As for the DNA scanner I don't remember who sold it, but I'm pretty sure it was the hydroponics person. It DOES work on both, since both are living things that could have genes, makes sense if ya think about it. Rat farming CAN be deep, but if you don't want it to be, do what I do. Continue to let them grow…
